Blown film troubleshooting: symptoms and checks
A structured way to investigate thickness, appearance, bubble stability and winding without changing several settings at once.
Uneven thickness
Identify whether variation occurs along the film length or around the bubble. Check the stability of feeding, extrusion output, haul-off, the die and cooling. Record sampling positions and timing before repeatedly adjusting the die.
Clarity or surface appearance
Compare resin grades, formulations and batches, then assess plasticisation, melt condition, cooling and the film surface. Clarity depends on material, structure and processing conditions; a fixed ranking of polymer types is not a reliable diagnosis.
Gels, black specks and contamination
Investigate mixed or contaminated material, incompletely melted particles and deposits from thermal degradation. Use material traceability, cleaning records and filtration checks to distinguish causes rather than treating every visible defect as the same type of gel.
Unstable bubble or wrinkles
Check drafts, cooling uniformity, bubble dimensions and haul-off stability, together with the web path, rollers and tension. Locate where the defect first appears before adjusting the relevant section.
Blocking and winding defects
Review film temperature, formulation, tension and roll condition. Separate blocking, poor roll edges and uneven winding hardness as different symptoms. Confirm improvements on trial samples before increasing production. Follow the equipment-specific stopping and isolation procedure for machine interventions.
