Plastic film basics: materials, processes and uses
Understand the relationship between polymer names, manufacturing processes and finished-film properties.
A material name is not a performance guarantee
Resin, formulation and processing jointly determine film properties. The same polymer can form different structures through different processes. Thickness, layers and surface treatment also influence the final application.
Common names
PE, PP, PET and PA identify material families. Names such as CPP, BOPP and BOPET also describe a manufacturing or orientation route. A blown film line does not directly replace cast film or biaxial orientation equipment.
| Name | Meaning | Process note |
|---|---|---|
| PE | Polyethylene, including LDPE, LLDPE and HDPE | Used in blown film and other processes with suitable grades |
| CPP | Cast polypropylene film | Produced by a cast film process |
| BOPP | Biaxially oriented polypropylene film | Oriented in two directions |
| BOPET | Biaxially oriented polyester film | Properties depend on material and orientation |
| PA | Polyamide (nylon) film | Available with different processing and multilayer structures |
Start with application requirements
Packaging films may need a balance of sealing, mechanical performance, appearance and barrier properties. Agricultural films have additional requirements related to their use environment and service life. Oxygen barrier and moisture resistance are separate properties; one material is not best at everything.
Confirm equipment and formulation together
Specify width, thickness, layer structure, materials and downstream processing. Check the resin grade data and trial samples with the equipment team. Food-contact, biodegradability and temperature suitability depend on the actual formulation and finished structure, not simply the polymer abbreviation.
Selection information for biodegradable materials
Confirm processing requirements for PLA, PBAT and their blends with the material supplier. A polymer name alone does not establish a complete temperature window, drying procedure or finished-product certification. Provide the grade, formulation range, target film width and thickness, and packaging application. Explore the biodegradable blown film range and biodegradable co-extrusion range before discussing production conditions.
