ABA Blown Film Machine Buying Guide: Layers, Materials and Configuration

An ABA blown film machine proposal becomes easier to evaluate when it starts with a clear film specification. Describe the film you need to produce, the materials you expect to use and the conditions under which the line will be assessed. Then compare the proposed configuration against those requirements.

Separate the layer structure from the equipment configuration

ABA describes an A/B/A layer arrangement. The label alone does not define the resin grades, layer ratios, number of independently controlled material streams or finished-film performance. Request a drawing that connects each material stream to the layers it supplies.

Use that drawing to check what can be changed independently. If the inner and outer surfaces require different formulations, discuss an independently fed three-layer configuration with the equipment team. For a proposal described as ABC, ask the supplier to identify the material and control arrangement for each layer.

The published SJCO and ABA series and three-layer co-extrusion series provide starting points for a discussion. Confirm the exact series and configuration in the proposed equipment list.

Describe the film and its downstream use

Provide a film sample or a dimensioned drawing. Identify the application and any later printing, lamination or bag-making operations. Define whether a stated width means layflat width, opened width or finished-bag width, and whether thickness refers to one film wall.

List the main production sizes separately from occasional sizes. A requirement to run several recipes or widths should include the expected frequency of changeovers and the criteria used to release the next product for production.

Turn quality expectations into checks that both parties can understand: thickness measurement method, appearance, winding condition and any required sealing or converting performance. Agree the relevant test methods for the actual application.

Confirm the formulation before discussing material savings

Identify the resin grades, blends and additives that are already known. If a formulation is still being developed, mark the open items clearly and provide the available material data sheets.

For a project using reprocessed material or filler, discuss its source, consistency and proposed use with the technical team. An ABA arrangement does not establish that a particular addition level will meet the film's appearance, strength or sealing requirements. Assess the actual recipe and samples before making a cost or quality conclusion.

Compare output on an agreed basis

A useful output statement identifies the formulation, film dimensions, layer arrangement, operating period and acceptance criteria. Ask whether the number represents extrusion output, short-term peak output or accepted film produced over the agreed measurement period.

When several products are required, review the important product cases individually. Record changeover time, off-spec film and the conditions used during the trial. These records help distinguish a line that runs one demonstration recipe from a configuration suited to the proposed production mix.

Put the options into the supply list

Check each item as included, optional or supplied by another party:

  • Material feeding and the connection between extruders and layers.
  • Die configuration and the specified rotation or oscillation arrangement.
  • Cooling, haul-off, tension control and winding.
  • Automatic air-ring control, thickness measurement and other automation.
  • Utility requirements, installation layout and operator access.
  • Commissioning, training, documentation and spare-parts support.

A photograph of an equipped demonstration line should be followed by a written list for the line being purchased.

Prepare the next technical discussion

Send your film application, sample or drawing, known formulation, main dimensions, output target and downstream requirements. Add the available factory height, floor space, electrical supply and existing auxiliary equipment. Unknown items can remain open for discussion.

Use the equipment RFQ checklist to organize the brief. If the project also includes making finished bags, review the film line and complete bag-production scope guide. Then discuss the proposed ABA configuration with Songshan Machinery.
