Choosing a Biodegradable Film Blowing Machine: A Project Checklist

For a biodegradable film project, identify the actual compound and the intended finished product before comparing equipment. Broad material names such as PLA or PBAT are useful starting points, but a machine proposal needs the grade, formulation and processing information relevant to the project.

Start with the material supplier's information

Collect the technical data sheet and available processing guidance for the proposed compound. Record the grade, supplier, additives and any approved blending instructions. If more than one formulation is planned, describe each one separately.

Request the grade-specific guidance for storage, material handling, drying where required and processing. Avoid using one universal drying or temperature setting for every biodegradable formulation. During equipment review, identify the information already confirmed and the questions that require a material trial.

A proposed change from an existing PE product should include both the present product specification and the requirements of the new compound. The technical review can then address the actual differences rather than relying on the material family name alone.

Define the film that will be sold or converted

Provide the intended use, main film dimensions, thickness definition and roll format. Add requirements for sealing, appearance, printing or bag making where relevant.

For an existing product, provide samples and the checks used to accept them. For a new product, agree how trial film will be evaluated before making a production decision. Identify which tests will be performed on the film and which will be performed after converting it into the finished article.

Material documentation and finished-product documentation have different scopes. Confirm the intended market, application and evidence needed for the finished product with the material supplier and relevant testing or certification organizations. Purchasing a machine does not, by itself, establish a compostability or food-contact claim for every article made on it.

Review the equipment against the proposed compound

Ask the equipment team to explain the proposed feeding, extrusion, die, cooling, haul-off and winding arrangements for the material and product brief. Record any options or auxiliary equipment required for the agreed process.

Discuss how the compound will be stored and supplied to the line, how product changes will be handled and what information operators will receive. Where the compound is new to the project, include a documented trial in the review plan rather than treating an untested formulation as an established production recipe.

The biodegradable film blowing machine range and published machine series provide product information for an initial discussion. The proposed grade, equipment configuration and operating conditions should then be confirmed together.

Evaluate the trial as a complete product case

Agree the compound, film specification, operating period and sampling plan. Record the accepted output, rejected material and the conditions used during the run. Check the roll against its next operation, such as printing or bag making, when that operation is part of the project.

Keep a record of the batch and formulation used. If the production formulation changes after the trial, review the change with the technical team and determine which checks need to be repeated.

Prepare an RFQ with the open questions visible

Include:

  • Compound grade and available material documentation.
  • Film application, sample or drawing, width and thickness.
  • Quality checks and intended converting operations.
  • Required output for the main product cases.
  • Factory conditions and available utilities.
  • Expected installation, training and technical-support scope.

If the compound or finished-product specification is not yet settled, state that clearly. The equipment RFQ checklist can help organize the known information. Discuss the material and film requirements before finalizing the equipment configuration.
